CANON INFORMATION
CHARACTER NAME: Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III
CANON: How To Train Your Dragon
HISTORY: Here and here
STRENGTHS:
Intelligence- Hiccup is smart. Ridiculously smart. He's an incredibly skilled inventor that has built devices centuries before anyone else even could conceive of them. He's built working prostheses for flying animals and also built a working gliding suit, among other things. He doesn't know everything about Dragons (In fact it's generally shown that Fishlegs tends to have a greater amount of theoretical knowledge than Hiccup does,) but he's able to use the still large amount he does know to practical effect in a very big way.
Compassion- He's got a great deal of compassion, being able to see the best in both people and animals, and cares for both immensely. This isn't without it's flaw, in that he can be a little too trusting, but it's also what earned him his friendship with Toothless. Without Hiccup's ability for compassion, dragons and Vikings would have gone on fighting each other until one or both groups were killed off.
Courageous- Hiccup won't hesitate to throw himself into danger ot help those who need it. Arguably, part of this is down to his insecurity, but a good chunk of it is down do his compassionate nature. He's been willingly locked in a cage with more than one dragon to prove they aren't as terrible as everyone else thinks they are, fought hill-sized dragons alongside Toothless to protect others, and charged into battle against entire armies with his friends just because those armies were trying to harm dragons.
FLAWS:
Stubbornness- It's not entirely a weakness, since Hiccup's stubbornness has gained him quite a few positive things, but it usually is. Once Hiccup gets an idea in his head, he'll see it through to the end, even to his own detriment. He's not often completely wrong in his way of thinking, but when he is he's catastrophically wrong. This is Bbest seen when confronting Drago, Hiccup's conviction that he can change Drago's mind eventually leads to Toothless being controlled by Drago's Alpha and Stoick's subsequent death.
Trusting- Also not entirely a weakness, but still a solid one in the wrong situation. Hiccup's a little too trusting of people's better nature. He's become somewhat less so over the years, after several betrayals of that trust, one of which includes the aforementioned attempt to change Drago's mind. Still, an amount of it remains.
Insecurity- It's mellowed out a good deal some over the years, but due to being considered the village screwup for most of his early life, he has a driving need to prove to everyone that he's not, even if he doesn't really need to. This can be seen, again, in the encounter with Dragon where he was determined to solve the problem his way, and through various other incidents in his life.

AU INFORMATION
AU CHARACTER NAME: Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III
AGE: 31
POSITION: Care of Magical Creatures Professor
AU BACKSTORY: Up until the dragons left for the Hidden World, things were largely the same as they were in canon. The main difference at that point was that Berk didn't just work with dragons, but all sorts of magical creatures.
Then, Grimmel attacked. As in canon, he was defeated, but instead of the dragons disappearing off to the Hidden World by themselves, the Hairy Hooligans and the other magical creatures went with them.
Unknown to them, the Hidden World was an exposed part of the Outlands with a time dilation effect. As years passed inside, centuries passed outside. As Nightfall approached, the time dilation effect broke down roughly 2 years before the start of the game, leaving New Berk quite solidly in the 21st century.
Explorers from Iceland with ties to Daybreak found Berk. Communication at first wasn't easy, but doable, considering Icelandic was similar to old norse in a lot of respects. The next two years were a flurry of getting Berk up to speed with the modern world, to minimal success. Hiccup, as the person with the most success at picking up new concepts without freaking out, eventually decided he'd visit the outside world. Plans were made for him to teach at Daybreak, and he went off to do so, with effort made to create a way for him to travel back to New Berk whenever he needed to.
AU PERSONALITY DEVIATION: No deviation. He's basically the same as he was in canon. The only real difference is that he's worked with other magical creatures alongside dragons.
RACE: Human
SECRET SOCIETY: New Berk is a Viking society from the 11th century that lives in a formerly time-dilated section of the Outlands. New Berk's greatest claim to fame, aside from being 11th century Viking in the 21st century, is being a society composed almost entirely of non-magical Tamers. They bond with their familiars not through any spell or magical skill, but simply by befriending them.
POWERS: Technically, Hiccup is a Tamer, although his bond with Toothless is one of friendship rather than one involving any magical influence whatsoever.
Toothless is a dragon capable of flying at high speed and firing high-powered explosive balls of plasma. He's an decent tracker and swimmer, although significantly less skilled than Tracker and Tidal class dragons are at the same thing. Part of his ability to track is strengthened by his ability of echolocation. He can also cloak himself using some unexplained mechanism involving electricity,

RP SAMPLE
1. TELL US ABOUT YOUR EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND.
No...traditional education, or at least not what you'd consider traditional? I learned how to read and write, I became an apprentice blacksmith. Picked up a few non-blacksmithing skills here and there. And then I apparently worked out the physics of flight and centuries before anyone else managed to, so that's a thing. Admittedly that was with dragons and a certain disregard for my own personal safety to back me up.
2. TELL US ABOUT YOUR TEACHING EXPERIENCE.
I've been teaching people to work with dragons and other animals since I was 15. Something I was basically working out as we went along, too.
3. WHAT UNIQUE PERSPECTIVES DO YOU THINK YOU BRING TO THE ACADEMY?
Well, there's the fact that I'm a Viking Chieftain. I thunk that's a unique perspective, all things considered.
As a serious answer? It's as a basically normal human. I don't use magic. None of my skill with animals is paranormal.
4. WHAT, IN YOUR OPINION, IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING FOR A SCHOOL TO PROVIDE TO ITS STUDENTS
A reasonably safe spot to learn? I say reasonably because kids are always going to find something dangerous to throw themselves into. You can't plan for everything, and trying to will just end up smothering them.
5. DESCRIBE YOUR COMMUNICATION STYLE AND HOW YOU INTERACT WITH COWORKERS.
My wife says I'm too sarcastic for my own good. Which, yeah probably true. It doesn't help that everybody I grew up with is a crazy person.
6. HOW DO YOU ENCOURAGE STUDENTS TO PUSH THEMSELVES AND TAKE THEIR SCHOOLWORK SERIOUSLY?
It's not exactly hard? I have an interesting class that's also a, what's it called? Oh right, elective. Nobody in it will have to be there. Plus I have a dragon, and that usually goes a long way towards getting people interested.
7. HOW DO YOU MANAGE STUDENTS WHO ARE DEFIANT OR ACTING OUT?
It sort of depends on how they're acting out. Sarcastic comments I can handle, but anybody who deliberately ignores instructions in my class is getting kicked out. Working with magical creatures can be dangerous, and the instructions are for both their safety and the animals.
8. HOW DO YOU ENCOURAGE AND MENTOR STUDENTS WHO ARE STRUGGLING OR DEPRESSED?
Sit 'em down. try and get them to talk. If not to me than somebody else. Most teenagers just want somebody to actually listen to them. After that, work with them to see if we can fix the problem together.
9. WHAT, IN YOUR OPINION, IS THE MOST IMPORTANT LESSON TO TEACH EVERY STUDENT WHO WALKS THROUGH OUR DOORS?
Respect for other living creatures. Look, fight them if you have to, even kill them if it's absolutely necessary, but at least treat them with respect when you do so. Preferably treat them with enough respect that you don't actually need to fight or kill them.
13. HOW DO YOU THINK YOUR CURRENT BOSS OR SUPERVISOR WOULD DESCRIBE YOUR JOB PERFORMANCE?
I don't actually have a boss at this point? Unless you count my wife, and she'd call me a stubborn idiot who at least has his heart in the right place.
16. ONE OF THE REQUIREMENTS OF ACADEMY FACULTY IS PROTECTING STUDENTS FROM THAT WHICH MIGHT DO THEM HARM. TELL US HOW EQUIPPED YOU ARE TO DO THIS.
My familiar is a dragon that breathes explosive balls of plasma, and I spent 10 years of my life protecting dragons from trappers. You tell me how equipped I am to do this.
17. WHAT ARE YOU WILLING TO SACRIFICE FOR YOUR STUDENTS?
Probably quite a bit. I mean, that's the kind of thing you don't really know until you're right there needing to do it, but I usually like to come up with ways around having to sacrifice anything. Aside from time and money, and those are kind of unavoidable.
